About Benin

Elephants in Pendjari350 years ago, the region now known as Benin was made up of numerous monarchies. The Kingdom of Dahomey was the most successful of these, with wealth based on the selling of slaves, in return for which it would receive magnificent articles of luxury. It is renowned for its place in history as the native land of West Africa’s most powerful rulers and also recognized as the area where the practice of voodoo originated. Benin is now a vibrant country which has embraced both democracy and capitalism with its own distinct flare. It still possesses much of the mysticism and enchantment that captured the imaginations of earlier generations of travelers.
